The temporomandibular joint connects the lower jaw and the head together, and it is also known as the TMJ. If this joint is stressed, misaligned or damaged, this can result in TMJ disorder, which is also known as TMD. Head, neck or jaw injuries can cause TMJ disorder, as well as stress, teeth clenching or arthritis.

Along with experiencing pain in the jaw or face, you may have TMJ disorder if:

  • You hear sounds like grinding or popping when opening or closing your mouth.
  • You are unable to open your mouth very wide when speaking, chewing or yawning.
  • Your jaw feels locked or stuck.
  • You feel pain when you bite down or chew.
  • You experience ear, shoulder or neck pain.
  • You have constant headaches.

Our dentist will examine your mouth and jaw to see what is causing the disorder and recommend the best course of treatment. Depending on the extent and cause of the TMJ disorder, we may recommend exercises to relax your jaw and face or changes to your lifestyle to lower stress, or we may perform restorative dental treatments or provide you with a mouth guard or night guard. More severe TMJ disorder cases may require jaw surgery.
