Everyone tries to avoid dental emergencies because they can be annoying, painful and overwhelming. However, when it happens, it’s important to understand that it is manageable with some necessary steps you can take to ensure your well-being and the safety of your teeth.

Here are some important steps and tips for dealing with some common dental emergencies:

  1. Toothache: This can happen for several reasons, like a tooth cavity or decay, exposed nerve, dental infection, grinding or clenching habits, a foreign body sticking between the teeth, sinus inflammation or infection and other issues as well. Usually, a toothache develops gradually and it is always recommended to manage it in its early stages. If you get a toothache and it is still in its early stage, rinse your mouth with warm water and floss gently to remove any food particles that may be stuck between your teeth. Next, you’ll want to contact your dentist to check the severity of the problem.
  1. Knocked-out tooth: If your tooth is knocked out due to trauma, find it and rinse it gently with water — without scrubbing or too much handling. Place the tooth in a cup of milk or saliva for safekeeping and then ice the area to reduce swelling and contact your dentist as soon as possible.
  1. Fallen crown, filling or dental veneer: Upon losing a filling, veneer or crown, try to find it and bring it in with you to your dentist. In the meantime, cover the exposed area with gum or wax.
  1. Facial swelling: Dental infections or infections around the wisdom teeth can lead to facial swelling. In case of facial swelling, rinse with warm water and salt several times during the day and apply hot compress onto the swollen area and contact your dentist immediately

It’s important to keep your primary goal to not have a dental emergency. Of course accidents can happen, but taking good care of your smile can go a long way to preventing some dental emergencies from arising. This means supplementing your daily oral hygiene care by regularly visiting your dentist for routine examinations and maintenance and when having an emergency, staying calm and take the steps outlined above to make sure that it is manageable without panicking.
